Ryan, a single father from Goondiwindi, transitioned from the grain and labour industries to mining. His long-time interest in haul trucks led him to apply for the NTI Haul Truck Operator role with MacKellar, an opportunity he eagerly embraced.

First Impressions and daily routine

From day one, Ryan was impressed by the organisation and support at the mine site. His typical day starts with checking assignments, attending pre-start meetings and conducting safety inspections before operating his truck. He values the structured workflow and teamwork.

Challenges and safety priorities

Initially, nerves and radio communication were challenges, but he learned that taking his time ensures safety. Ryan emphasises the importance of following speed limits, wearing proper PPE and staying alert to prevent accidents.

Enjoyment and future aspirations

Ryan enjoys continuous learning and the camaraderie of his crew. Looking ahead, he aims to become a Trainer Assessor and expand his skills to operating dozers and diggers.

Ryan's advice for aspiring operators

Ryan advises newcomers to listen to trainers, take their time, stay alert and drive safely. His most memorable experience was viewing operations from a digger’s perspective, which deepened his understanding of the job.
